Summer Sun Safety

Nearly everyday, I hear a patient say, “I just love the sun.” as if they think I’m going to respond with, “Ew, I HATE it!”.

Who doesn’t love the sun?!?! In fact, I’m often cautious when it comes to sun-sensitive procedures and medications because I WANT patients to enjoy the summer.

So, I’m here to tell you how you can enjoy every last minute of sunshine this summer…SAFELY!

  1. Sunscreen DAILY

    • Broad spectrum

    • SPF 30+

    • Water resistant (TIP: This does NOT mean waterproof! Most water resistant sunscreens will say 40 or 80, meaning after 40 or 80 minutes of swimming, you must reapply.)

  2. Physical protection

    • If you haven’t caught the UPF clothing bug yet, where have you been? Literally, you can find it EVERYWHERE and at a very reasonable price! (Insider tip: I recently saw UPF shirts at Costco for $10!!)

    • Wide-brimmed hats (I favor wide brimmed hats over ball caps for that extra ear protection.)

    • Sun glasses

  3. Timing is everything

    • The sun’s rays are strongest between the hours of 10am and 2pm.

    • Life happens and it’s inevitable that outdoor activities will take place during this time. Try to seek periods of shade if you’re out for long periods during these hours.

  4. Stay hydrated

    • Along with sunburns, dehydration is another summertime danger.

    • Make sure to drink plenty of water while outside, especially when enjoying adult beverages!

Summer is meant to be enjoyed and that includes enjoying the beautiful sunshine! When done with appropriate precautions, sun exposure is good for the mind, body, and soul!
